A while back my FIL was on a kick about earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes. After bombarding him with actual facts showing the WTS is full of shit when declaring these activies to be increasing in frequency he's now dropped that subject. Of coure he never admitted to being wrong..haha. Instead he agreed that you can't always believe what you read. I assume he doesn't apply this to the WTS though.
The funny part is he had my info for about a month before bringing up that he had read my emails. Thats odd. Maybe he was trying to muster a response but couldn't? I don't know. However, as he was going on about not believing everything you read he brought up evolution as an example. I didn't challenge him at the time. I was in a, wow, this guy is a total idiot, mindset. But, it got me wondering.
What does the WTS say about evolution? I know they dispute the fossil record, but on what grounds? I know they have some whacked out theory about a water canopy and how that throws off radio carbon dating. I think I've also heard him say something like theres no evidence of one speies turning into another, which, of course, is completely untrue.
I want to have some fun with him, but when you're dealing with someone whose mind is mush and filled with irrational ideas it's hard to predict what his answers will be. Often times I'mleft thinking, wtf is this retard talking about. I'd like to be better prepared when I start to pull the wings off this fly.

Are Evolution & Morality Mutually Exclusive?
by shadow inthere are a couple of long threads going right now about evolution & abortion.. .
if evolution were true, how could there be any basis for morality?.

adamh,
To further your point, the least regilious countries in the World are the safest countries. They also happen to be the happiest countries.
As to Jefferson, it's important to remember his opinion was that governments went bad trying to control people by forcing them into religions they didn't believe in. At some point, those people either caused great harm to the government or replaced government altogether. Therefore, he felt since religion could help government achieve it's goals why not promote all religion.
Based on his thinking, Jefferson would love the JWs. They control the crap out of people and discourage them from becoming involved in the affairs of the State. If you're Jefferson, this is the perfect scenario.

The Frog joke reminded me of this one:
Mr. Bear and Mr. Rabbit didn't like each other very much. One day, while walking through the woods, and they came across a golden frog.
They were amazed when the frog talked to them. The golden frog admitted that he didn't often meet anyone, but, when he did, he always gave them six wishes. He told them that they could have 3 wishes each.
Mr. Bear immediately wished that all the other bears in the forest were females. The frog granted his wish. Mr. Rabbit, after thinking for a while, wished for a crash helmet. One appeared immediately, and he placed it on his head. Mr. Bear was amazed at Mr. Rabbit's wish, but carried on with his second wish. He wished that all the bears in the neighboring forests were females as well, and the frog granted his wish.
Mr. Rabbit then wished for a motorcycle. It appeared before him, and he climbed on board and started revving the engine. Mr. Bear could not believe it and Complained that Mr. Rabbit had wasted two wishes that he could have had for himself. Shaking his head, Mr. Bear made his final wish, that all the other bears in the world were females as well, leaving him as the only male bear in the world.
The frog replied that it had been done, and they both turned to Mr. Rabbit for his last wish. Mr. Rabbit revved the engine, thought for a second, then said, "I wish that Mr. Bear was gay!" and rode off as fast as he could! -

Thomas Jefferson wrote about this concept when trying to gain support for his idea of freedom of church from the State.
Basically, Jeffersom argued that it was in the States best interest to allow people to chose whatever religion they wanted, even if all were worshipping a God that never existed, because many people, and especially those of lower inteligence, had higher morals because of religion itself. In other words, religion makes it easier for the government to control people because they are more likely to obey the laws of thier religion than the laws of their government. And since most religions require people to behave in such ways that are consistent with what government needs, then promoting religion is a good idea for the State.
The underlying theme to Jefferson's point is that no society can exist without laws, but it's easier to get people to obey the laws if they think some higher power will send them to Hell or worse.

Having lived in Clearwater, Fl for 20 years I know many Scientologists. I even worked for a group of them for 10 years. To compare them to JWs is ridiculous.
For one, they keep it to themselves. 2. They certainly do not seperate themselves from others. 3. They are usually very well educated. I would consider several I know to be in my personal top 10 of smartest guys I've ever met. 4. From my observation, a lot of scientologists are much improved people as a result of their religion. 5. All the ones I know are normal, very high functioning and sane. I don't know 1 JW who can claim that.
All that said, they do have some wierd beliefs. Then again, their beliefs are no more crazy than believing in a flying zombie I suppose. But compared to JWs, Sino's look pretty good.

Strange things happening...
by DS211 insome strange things are happening.. 1. wife started smoking.
2. wife agreed that the whole "clean up after armageddon while growing to perfection" thing is all speculation.. 3. as i was going to the meeting tonight (i had a part and kids are sick so she stayed in) she says "do you have to go?"..
4. when i got home she says " i wanna go out and party..... hmmmmmm.
-
Oh Gawd
It's a rather large leap from wanting to party to swinging and hard drugs don;t you think? And, what's wrong with swinging? It just sex. As long as it's between mature consenting adults who are enjoying themselves there's no harm.
DS211, you should have stayed home. It doesn't sound like you're living your life the way you want yet. That should be your greatest fear above all else. That should be everyone's greatest fear: not having the life they want.

JW women love and the control system my view point
by MysticMage inwell let's just say i never had any luck with women in the jws.
i only met one super hot girl with a great body.
and sexy voice.
-
Oh Gawd
Mystic Mage don't fight your instincts. Physical attraction is THE single most important aspect to romantic relationships and one of the strongest powers of the animal kingdom. You can't fight your DNA. You are here to conquer and reproduce. You need to be sexually stimulated in order to do that. Of course, beauty can be defined in many, many ways. Phyiscal beauty, however, is the core starting point. If you're not physically attracted to your mate I guarantee you that both of you will end up miserable.
That said, the girl you think is beautiful others may see as just ordinary. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. But, definately don't fight your instints on love. If you don't think she HOTT now you won't in 30 years either. It's chemistry and either it's there or it's not. That doesn'make any girl your not attracted to ugly or less worthy. You may connect with her on other levels, but if your not physically attracted then she's not a good mate. Likewise, a girl my have a great body, but if you don't like her personality then she's not a good mate either. Although if you banged her a few times before cutting bait I would understand:)
So while physical attraction is where a relationship starts...(you look at her and your mind thinks, I want "that", even if the three guys with you think so-so), in order for that relationship to develop into something long term AND healthy, you HAVE to like the other person. In other words, your perfect mate needs to be the total package. She has to fulfill the needs of both of your heads:) Anything less and, imo, you will never know true happiness.
